   I'm a new member and would like to report of a Number of BISF A1 type houses in Braintree Essex. I live on Rosemary Avenue CM7 2TB where there are 68 semi detached, 20 on Gilchrest way, 32 on Coldnailhurst Avenue, 4 on Deanery Hill, 44 on Deanery Gardens, 10 on Dean Rogers Place and a terrace of three odd prefabs on Dean Rogers Place. I have done alot of work on the house by gutting the internal walls and changing the layout with new 2x4" stud walls, plaster board and insulating it with reflective foil insulation. I have put some patio doors in where the dining room window was and block off the existing back door to make the kitchen bigger. I want to put a door to the outside coal storage room from the bottom of the staircase and make it a utility room. I think there is a metal cross member behind in the wall. Can anyone confirm this?   Another great selection of properties and all with timber outbuildings rather than block.
  The roofing sheets also appear to have fared a lot better than the corrugated asbestos sheets normally used.

  Thank you for your locations JS, there really are some nice examples of renovated properties in the area along with one house built on a slope that must have the deepest ground floor level that I have ever seen!

  wow that is a great selection of renovations. Id love to know the process/ cost involved in getting the upper part rendered like most of those have had done. Really makes the house look very modern but Ive not seen it done before, and cant work out what they did with the orignal cladding!

   I hope my previous two posts have given happy memories to other people who lived in these style houses. For me, it was a great house to grow up in. I still vividly remember the sound of the house creaking and banging on a summers evening - the sound of running up & downstairs (and which stairs creaked), the sound of the original front door shutting. Also the sound of walking on the footpaths around the houses.
   
   I grew up in one of the many BISF Steel Houses in Dronfield, Derbyshire. I've noticed none of them are on your list, so here's a list of all if the, which you can hopefully add. They are all still standing and lived in today.
   
   Orchard Square, Dronfield Woodhouse, Derbyshire, S18 - 8 houses
   Holm Close, Dronfield Woodhouse, Derbyshire, S18 - 14 houses
   Fairview Road, Dronfield, Derbyshire - 20 houses
   Cecil Road, Deonfield, Derbyshire, S18 - 30 houses
   Chiverton Close, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 - 12 houses
   Snape Hill Close, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 - 16 houses
   
   There are also some in the neighbouring village of Unstone, so here's a list of those.
   
   Sheffield Road, Unstone, S18 - 10 houses
   Brierley Road, Unstone, S18 - 18 houses
   Loundes Road, Unstone, S18 - 50 houses
   
   I hope this information helps. As you can see, there are almost 200 BISF Steel Houses here that maybe you didn't know about.

  Hello Kerry
  What a fantastic recollection of your memories of living in a BISF house and the amount of detail was amazing. It reminded me of the very first time I walked into one at the age of 16! It was in a similar condition back then with the old steel tall kitchen units and steel windows.
  I have moved the post to the memories thread, I hope you don't mind as I would like to encourage more people to share similar amazing recollections as you have. It gives such a valuable insight into the houses as they were before many of the typically modern renovations occurred that we see today.
  I shall update your locations tomorrow due to the late hour but once again thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, they have made my day!

    *Hi Ed, my roof is made of corrugated metal. I had quates from 5 companies. All of them were happy with this kind of roof. I've got 2.8kw for 6.3 grand, in April 2012.

    Hi Rai and welcome to the site! I looked into having solar panels put on my roof at Freeview Road, Bath, BA2 1DS, but hardly anyone would fit them because of the roof type (asbestos cement sheets on a steel structure) and the only quote I did get was a lot higher than the going rate.

     My BISF house is on Denshaw Grove, Morley, Leeds LS27 with 2.8 kw solar panels on the roof (not on Google maps yet). Also I found BISF houses on Eastleigh Drive, Leigh Road and Westerton Road in Tingley, Wakefield, WF3
